As is usually the case with building works, the resurfacing in the main yard was meant to be completed by this weekend but you can't blame the workmen as they've had to deal with some appalling weather recently. I'm sure everyone is in the same boat as we continually get lashed with rain which is falling on top of ground which is already sodden. The builders have been doing the best they can and had to take a lot of the top surface off to get to a decent base before they laid some new drainage. The yard will now be prepped for the concrete to arrive next week and hopefully we can get a clear window in the weather to get it to set properly. Fingers crossed it'll be finished this week but it's hard to believe as the place still looks like a bomb site! Daily work has carried on around things with the horses and staff dealing very well with the temporary setup. Luckily we haven't had too many runners recently as most of the team are gearing up for the turf season and some of the all-weather team are now saving themselves for the new turf season next month too. Huntingdon racecourse has had a nightmare this winter with three meetings lost to flooding and it remains to be seen if the place is dry enough for their meeting next Sunday. If it does get the go ahead, we could have our only runner of the week there in Clenched. She has run ok in a couple hurdle races so far and this one will qualify her for a handicap race next time. She jumps well but I'm not sure the soft ground is ideal for her. |
