Back to Earth

15/7/2018

After a memorable time of things last week whilst celebrating my birthday with a winner in the form of Terri Rules at Yarmouth, we were brought right back down to Earth at the same course just a week later.
Tarakona was a filly we were excited about running as all her homework had been very pleasing and she had such a great attitude to racing. Before a horse runs, in your head you go through all the scenarios which could happen - she could win, get a place but hopefully not finish last. The one thing you never even consider is that your horse won't finish the race but sadly in this case it was true.
At the halfway point of the five furlong race, Shelley quickly pulled Tarakona up after she lost her action and the first vet on the scene wasn't too optimistic about the horse's chances of surviving. Thankfully the second vet was a bit more hopeful and after plenty of pain relief, we took the filly home and had our vet give her an x-ray. Thankfully the injury wasn't life-threatening and a fractured pelvis is something that, given the proper recovery, will heal in time. It does mean that she will be out of action for a while and the first phase of her recovery is to be tied up for four weeks to prevent her from rolling and causing more damage. Like a human who is laid up with injury, I'm sure it is a bit tedious for her but she is being a great patient and has been very spoilt!

Apart from that, the horses continue to run extremely well with three of our other four runners all finishing in the placings. Even Boxatricks ran a career best in his third maiden race and he is one to watch now that he qualifies for handicaps.

We had a busy time off the track too with the Tattersalls July Sale taking place in town.
Over 800 horses went through the auction ring and we had spent plenty of hours sifting through the lots to sort the wheat from the chaff. It turned out to be a family affair after we bought two horses who are related to two horses already in the yard.
WILSON is a full brother to Oceanus who has won two races for us since we bought him last year and he looks the perfect type to improve for a change of scenery. He was an impressive maiden winner as a two-year old but hasn't quite matched that form since for Luca Cumani. He is a horse that we have followed throughout his career and I'm delighted that we could buy him.
He is available for syndication with 10% shares costing £1600 each plus £200 per month all-inclusive training fees. For more information, CONTACT US or email me on juliafeilden@aol.com
The second horse we bought is a half-sister to Our Cilla called TELEKINETIC who has yet to race but looking at the size of her you can see why - she is massive! She has obviously needed time to grow into her frame and Our Cilla didn't win until she was three-years old so this filly should give her owner Tommy Healy plenty of fun.

Thank you to everyone who attended the owners' barbecue last Sunday. It was organised a bit last-minute to celebrate stable staff week but plenty of you saw it advertised on this blog and turned up in good spirits. I can give you plenty of notice for our next event as it is already booked - the Julia Feilden Racing Golf Day will take place on Thursday 30th August at 12 noon with a barbecue for everyone at 5pm back at the yard. All are welcome!

Thankfully things will be a bit quieter this week as we just have two entries.
Sir Fred put up a career best when stepping up to 1m4f last time so hopefully another hike in trip to 1m6f at Wolverhampton on Monday will bring out more improvement. He has a great attitude and tries very hard so that should stand him in good stead. He is from a family of late-maturing stayers so he will win soon over this kind of trip.

The other runner will be Terri Rules at Yarmouth on Wednesday. She has had a great season so far with three wins on the board and came through late to get her head in front at the track last time. We have tried to freshen her up as she has had a busy time of things and hopefully there is still some more fuel left in the tank.
